This video traces the origin and evolution of the Woolly Bugger, one of the most iconic and effective flies in the world of fly fishing. Though often credited to Barry Beck, the fly was actually invented by Russ Blessing in Pennsylvania. Barry helped popularize it through Fly Fisherman magazine and shared it widely, including on a 1975 Montana trip where the fly proved wildly successful.
The Woolly Bugger’s universal appeal lies in its pulsating marabou tail and simple, fish-catching design. Later, during a trip interrupted by Hurricane Mitch, Barry's late wife Cathy developed a bulkier version—dubbed the “Super Bugger”—designed to push water and attract fish in murky saltwater conditions. It featured stacked hackle, silicone legs for lifelike movement, and a touch of throat color for added realism.
The Super Bugger excelled in both salt and freshwater, catching bonefish, permit, and large trout. Its success led to its inclusion in Umpqua's fly offerings, and it remains a go-to pattern for anglers seeking action, vibration, and versatility in their presentations.
